Sunday, March 5, 1967. Franchise American Basketball Association -This certifies that Lawrance P. Shields is the holder of a Franchise authorizing it to compete as a member of the American Basketball Association in the city of Minneapolis St. Paul, State of Minnesota - It has the Official Gold (incoprorated in the State of Delaware) seal. It is signed by the league Secretary, President and of course, the Commissioner George L. Mikan.
This came from George Mikan's personal collection, and the theory of its retainment is that after the first season, the Muskies relocated (due to bad attendance) to Miami Florida, so there Franchise Certificate was turned back in to the Commissioner (Mikan for another year). When Mikan left, he probably took it with him since the Muskies were a distant memory, and that's where he made his home. This has to be one of (if not the most) the
most historically significant artifacts that exist from the ABA today. The league was only formed on February 1, 1967 a little over a month prior to the date of the certificate. It is beautifully custom matted and framed to compliment, in a black and gold laquer which has gold flakes running through it.
